How to accept credit card offers on the phone?

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

I keep getting credit card offers on the phone from Discovery Card. They want my birthday. Mom’s maiden name etc. I won’t give it to them so that ends that. How do you accept an offer on the phone now a days without worrying about Identity theft ?

You go to their website - and either do an application online or call their 800 number.
Keep in mind - that you NEVER know who is calling you.
It could always be a scam.

Get off those lists - nothing good ever comes out of accepting any phone offers.
EVER.
Google: DoNotCall.org
And get on that list.

And get your creidt reports and get off the solicitation lists.
Go to
Annual Credit Report.com
Get your reports - print them out - and then click on the link to be removed from promotional calls and mailings.
Be careful about navigating through that site.
They will want you to pay for your credit score - something you do not need unless you are buying a house.
The reports and what’s in them it’s what’s important.
Reports are free - always have been.

Does getting lots of credit card offers hurt my credit?

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Okay, that probably sounds like a stupid question, but I read that the number of inquiries about your credit can affect your credit score. It said "This includes promotional inquiries such as solicitations." Since my credit card offers say I’m "pre-approved" based on my credit score, I’m assuming that means they have made inquiries.

So, anyway, thanks. :) Btw, I’m not actually asking for or getting the cards, I’m just wondering about the inquiries.

Promotional inquiries are "always" soft inquiries - soft inquiries do not hurt you since the only one who sees them is you and they are not used for credit scores.

Hard inquiries are done when you apply for credit.
Hard inquiries will hurt, how much would depend on how thick or thin your credit file is.
If your credit file is pretty thin, few accounts with not much age, then the inquiries will hurt more.

The inquiries will have less of an impact around 6 months and generally no impact at one year (an underwriter.may notate inquiries that are longer than one year)

How can I stop getting pre approved credit card offers?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

These are unwanted offers. A telephone call to the given ‘opt-out’ number and a written request to stop these has caused the offers to increase many fold!

Try this website. I used it and have not received any offers since.

How do I get rid of all those annoying credit card offers?

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I get at least 3 of these in the mail a day. I do not want any credit cards and it’s just a waste of paper. Is there any telephone number or website I can go to to opt out of this junkmail?

The simplest is to go to http://www.optoutprescreen.com this is the offical site to remove your name from the lists.

Once you do that you will no longer receive any of the pre-approved applications.

Anyone know of an credit card offers with really low APRs?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

I’m looking for something very well known, visa.com for example. Not a link to some unusual site that works as a 3rd party. I need a low APR after the introductory offer. I want to transfer the balances of my dept store cards to one major credit card with a lower interest rate. The lowest rates I’ve seen are 17-19%. I have good credit. Thanks for any help or tips.

I think you are asking for something way too specific. The site below is a Web site that gives you options to look at. It has a list of credit cards for people with good credit and all of them allow balance transfers.

When you find the card you want, click on where it says "apply here" on the card picture and it will direct you to the issuer’s Web site.

Apply for one that doesn’t have an annual fee.

Good luck.

What credit card offers the best deal with respect to converting money spent on hotels into airline miles?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

In August and September I will be staying in hotels for work. I am looking for the best opportunity to convert the money spent towards airline frequent flyer miles. I know some cards, at times, offer as much as 3 miles per dollar spent. Does anyone know of any good, curent offers? Thanks.

Credit card companies are NOT looking for new customers so there are no great offers currently

Pre-Approved Credit Card Offers: How to stop getting them?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Yesterday on the Today show, Jean Chatzky was on talking about how identity thieves have been dumpster diving to get the pre-approved credit card offers that companies mail out to people, unsolicited.

People usually just rip them up and toss them out. A reporter ran a test where they ripped up the applications, then taped them back together and mailed them to the credit card companies. Amazingly, many companies (including BofA) actually issued the credit cards, and some even accepted "change of address" information on these messy ripped-and-re-pasted things!

This is what Jean recommended:
1. SHRED: Don’t just rip up the applications. Shred them.
2. OPT OUT: You can call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT and register your information. Then, by law the companies have to stop sending you the pre-approved credit apps.

Glad to hear the Today Show stole an idea from a blogger. Here is the original from back in March: www.cockeyed.com/citizen/creditcard/application.shtml.

Let your credit card companies know you don’t want to receive checks.

Here is an easy way to shred a bunch of junk mail: www.shredjunkmail.com

What do you do with unsolicited credit card offers?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I find them potentially dangerous. Yet I still get them despite having OPTed out at the credit bureau.

I usually send back the prepaid envelopes over-stuffed with junk mail. What do you do?

I usually shred them, but you just opened my eye.

Thanks for the great idea.

Do I really need to buy travel insurance when my Platinum credit card offers medical cover?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

I recently returned from a trip to the US and Canada. I didn’t buy travel insurance because I figured I was covered, having used my Platinum credit card to buy the ticket. Was I just plain lucky nothing happened to me during my trip? Did I take unnecessary risks? Is my Platinum card medical cover really equivalent to a travel insurance?

This assumes you mean a Platinum American Express Card.

You were probably just lucky. Travel medical insurance is NOT automatic when you buy an airline ticket with the card.

However, AMEX does sell travel medical insurance and you can purchase it per trip or get an annual policy. Just call the toll free number on the back of the card.
