Question for Financial Advisor: Credit Card Approval?

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Hello, I will need the expertise of a financial advisor or counselor for my question as it applies to credit scores/cards/reports.

Long story short - I destroyed my credit 10 years ago when I was 18. I haven’t been able to apply for a credit card since. However, several years ago, I took out a student loan which I have been making payments on, on time. I also have a secure job that I’ve been working with for the past 2 years. I have checked my credit report with the 3 major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) and I am in good standing with all of them. I recently took a look at my credit score and it is at 723-735 which was very surprising to me. After all these years, I thought I had either a horribly low credit score or none for that matter. Has my credit been cleared or "reset"? Why is it that I still can’t get approved for a credit card?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you get the Experian credit score? The 723 to 735 thing could be a Fakko score and not your real FICO score.

Your old delinquent accounts have fallen off the credit report and all that is left is your positive accounts and your up-to-date student loan. Which is a good thing.

You may still have problems getting a credit card because you have no history of owning a credit card.

The best way to fix that problem is to ask your bank for a credit card. They know you best and can tell you immediately if you qualify or whether it needs to be a secured credit card for a while.

See if your current e-mail provider will allow an additional e-mail address on you existing account with a separate password. Most will these days.

How to rebuild credit? Still no approval on credit card even had paid debts 10 years ago? Why? No 2nd chance?

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Most likely you have no credit history. You need to begin building a credit history by first getting a debit credit card. Often times, you can get a store credit card before a general credit card. Apply for a card at a department store. They may give you a small line of credit, that you can use to start building your history. Make sure you pay off th echarges every month.

Credit Card Approval Rejected due to Large Balance?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

I want to get a credit card but I was rejected a while back. I am in the process of rebuilding my credit. I have around a 700 now but can’t seem to get approved for a credit card. I don’t want to keep applying and getting rejected because I know that will report negatively on my credit report.

I am currently on a payment plan with two other credit cards with a pretty large balance (around $8k each).

Is the large balance on the other two credit cards the reason I can’t get approved with a decent credit score? Is there a way around his w/o getting a secured credit card? Please help!
Without going into it too much, ALL the credit card debt was incurred from a medical emergency, not due to a life style of spending. Having said that, I tried to pay more (faster) the balance but the credit card company, both of them stated that since I am currently on a payment plan for the next 5-6 years, either paying off my balance OR making more a month would actually hurt my credit. I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, not being able to get a credit card to help my credit (large balance) and not being able to pay off my credit cards as fast as I want. What do I do?

You need to improve your debt to income ratio. Best way to do that is pay down your current credit cards.

dental credit card approval help?!?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

ok so i turned 18 on april. the dentist said i needed braces. & last time i went to the dentist (in april before i was 18) they told my dad that he could apply for this credit card which would then help him to be able to pay the braces in monthly payments. but he didnt want to cause hes an ass.

do you think that maybe i could apply for the credit card so i can pay it off myself?!

Fees average $5,413 but can go up to $7,625 for straightening your teeth with traditional braces (orthodontics), according to BracesInfo.com. Add about $500 for "tooth colored" ceramic brackets; and behind-the-teeth (called lingual or concealed) braces are an additional $2,000-$5,000.
As an alternative, the Invisalign company says its clear plastic trays start at $3,500 and average around $5,000 nationwide, but can cost more. Most dental plans cover orthodontics for children up to age 18, but not for adults.
There are also monthly office visits so the costs will add up quick.

Anytime you make such a significant charge on a credit card, you end up paying thousands more in interest and finance charges.
You are 18, have no credit history and would probably be turned down for a card. A lender is not going to take the risk that you will not be able to pay.

The cost of braces can vary widely, depending on a number of factors. The experience of the orthodontist you choose, the area of the country where you live, the degree of correction needed for your teeth, and other important considerations will help determine the final cost. However, on average, patients should expect braces to cost between $4,000 and $10,000.

Your dad is being smart. He’s older and wiser than you. He knows that putting your braces on credit would be a bad move and would hurt him in the end.

My advice to you is to find a job. If after a few years, you are doing well financially, consider getting braces at that time. I still would not recommend putting the charges on credit because that revolving debt will hurt your credit score.

Citi credit card approval?

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Would i get approved for a citi card if i have no credit. I applied yesterday and did not get a response. Someone i know got an instsant reply on there application. Is there a way to check my application status

You should receive a letter in the mail telling you that you were approved or most likely not approved. Most of the time, especially applying over the internet you should get an instant approval.
